At home, we're such health buffs so we only eat brown rice. We believe that a healthy diet is very important, so we don't normally have fried rice at home because it's usually cooked using white rice. One time I got a bit curious, why can't we try to make fried rice using brown rice instead? I was already thinking of different ingredients to create delicious brown fried rice when I came across this article. The recipe tasted marvelous! I customized it a bit but the base of the recipe is still there, so please check out my version below.
Difficulty: Beginner
Yields: 6 Servings
Total Cost: 81 pesos
Cost per service: 13.5 pesos per serving
Ingredients:
2 Cups Brown Rice, cooked
3 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
1 Medium Red Onion, chopped
3 Eggs, lightly beaten
2 Strips Crispy Bacon, chopped (you can also use Ham, Longganisa or Chicken)
1/2 Cup Mixed Vegetables (green peas, carrots, and corn), thawed
1 Tablespoon Soy Sauce (2 is a bit too salty)
1 Tablespoon Sesame Oil
Preparation:
- Cook the brown rice according to package, I usually cook mine in a rice cooker with 2 1/2 cups of water for 2 cups of brown rice. Cool to room temperature.
- Heat pan with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil for around 30 seconds. Place eggs in the pan and scramble eggs until cooked but not dry. Set aside.
- Add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add onion and stir-fry over medium heat for around 3 minutes or until tender. Add bacon and stir along with the onions. Add brown rice, mixed vegetables, and soy sauce to taste. Drizzle sesame oil to integrate the 'Chinese' flavor and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in the eggs and cook until the dish is heated. Serve.
Amazing how you can drizzle in some soy sauce and sesame oil and the dish magically turns 'Chinese'. Try out the recipe and tell me what you think!
Here's another variation using Chinese sausages. Again, really good!

We're using ordinary rice only and brown rice if occasion calls for. Really brown rice for health concious people.

ReplyDeleteYeah, it's best to use day-old rice! It's actually pretty good. It has a more 'oat-like' taste.
