Coffee Gear That Every Serious Coffee Drinker Needs to Have

Coffee Gear That Every Serious Coffee Drinker Needs to Have

You already have hundreds of hours under your belt brewing coffee using the basic coffee gear and you decided that you want to take coffee a bit more seriously. In the same manner as there are different ways you can cook an egg, there are also a number of tools you can use to alter the brewing process - each producing a very distinct cup. That's one reason why coffee aficionados have so many toys at their disposal.

Now that you have a basic brewer, a digital scale, and a grinder, let's take a look at some advanced coffee gear that serious coffee drinkers use to help complete your home brew bar.

A Pour Over Kettle

You can easily distinguish serious coffee drinkers with the rest of the pack by the kettle they use. Serious coffee drinkers use a gooseneck pour over kettle because it allows them to control the flow of water for an even extraction during the brewing process. It's also a beautiful centerpiece in your personal brew bar.

I personally use a Hario Buono Kettle (along with an induction stove) due to its balance of design and affordability, but there are a number of other pour over kettles in the market. You can also opt to purchase an electronic pour over kettle instead with built-in temperature control settings for more precise brewing.

You can get a Hario Buono Kettle (Php3099.75) from Lazada in the Philippines. Make sure you get it with one of the regular promos to get huge discounts!

A French Press

Coffee Gear That Every Serious Coffee Drinker Needs to Have - Buy a French Press Philippines

The French Press has long been praised as the tool that produces the best cup of coffee. This was before the advent of third-wave specialty coffee and the french press has been dethroned for quite some time now (more on that later). If you like a lot of body and grit in your cup, then the french press is for you. I personally use a Bodum French Press, the gold standard for french press coffee. Oh, it can also be used to make a great cold brew concentrate.

You can get a Bodum French Press at any Starbucks store in the Philippines or a Tramontina French Press from Lazada.com.

An AeroPress

I know it's ugly and it looks like a syringe but the Aerobie AeroPress has dethroned the french press in recent years as the coffee brewer that makes the best cup of coffee by the world coffee community. This baby combines full immersion brewing with regulated pressure to create a high quality cup. It also uses a microfilter to remove the grit, so it produces a cleaner cup compared to a french press.

I regularly use my Aerobie AeroPress using the inverted method to enjoy a good, clean cup. It's also very easy to clean.

You can get an Aerobie AeroPress (Php2,100) at Extraction Coffee Co or from Lazada.com in the Philippines.

A Chemex

Coffee Gear That Every Serious Coffee Drinker Needs to Have - Buy a Chemex Coffee Maker Philippines

The Chemex is touted as the scientifically correct way of brewing coffee. This brewer is recognized by museums such as the Smithsonian for its excellent design and is one of the most elegant coffee brewers on the market. Brewing the perfect cup using a Chemex is going to be challenging for beginners because you need to master the task of pouring a slow, controlled stream of water using a pour over kettle. It's worth the effort as I have had some of the best cups of coffee that I have ever tasted brewed over a Chemex.

You can get an Chemex 8-Cup Classic (Php3,200) at Coffeenow.ph in the Philippines.

Toddy Cold Brew

There are a number of brewers in the market for cold brew coffee, but the Toddy Cold Brew Brewer remains ahead of the pack for its combination of design and affordability.

You can purchase a Toddy Cold Brew BrewerIwaki Cold Drip (Php2,000) and a Kalita Moving Cold Drip (Php15,400) at Extraction Coffee Co in the Philippines.

It's time to complete your personal brew bar at home. Now that you know the coffee gear you need, you're now better prepared to embark on your journey for coffee perfection. Remember that being great requires a lot of practice, so don't stop brewing. Coffee gear can only take you so far.

Now that you have the gear, here's where you can get freshly roasted coffee beans delivered to you.

When it comes to coffee, don't settle. Save your friends from a lifetime of bad coffee by sharing this article.

  1. Wow, I thought that French Press is only for tea! We almost bought one because my husband and I are both tea drinkers. We rarely drink coffee. But thanks for the tip, a great gift idea for friends and family who loves coffee.

  2. I have been trying the new brewing methods lately like the pour over and the aeropress. Never had coffee using a chemex yet and hope a cafe here in Cebu will offer a coffee experience with that glass. I am also interested with the cold brewer.

    1. Unfortunately, it's still very hard to find a toddy in the Philippines. Yeah, I love the Chemex! It really brews a clean, crisp cup of coffee. What pour over brewer do you use?

    1. I think the brewer would probably be more handy. It's easier to clean up an both the aero and a french press.

    1. Bodum is a classic. It's very durable and classy, but any french press would do as long as the grind is right

  13. As a busy med student, the Aeropress has been my saviour. I can now enjoy a superb cup of coffee with minimal preparation (it literally is so easy to clean). My only problem now is how to politely reject my classmates' request for my coffee in class too. :D

    1. So true Desiree! Look for Kaye Ong's Aeropress recipe that won 3rd place in this year's world aeropress championships. You will have a great cup in less than 5 mnutes! I have been using it for my home brews.

  14. Great blog! Very informative and helpful especially for me that's looking for another brewing equipment. I have a question tho, I am using a Bialetti Moka Pot, and I'm planning to buy another brewing equipment, so far what I'm rooting for is a French Press but just found out (from this blog) that AeroPress is better. Now I am really confused what to buy, I really love the quality of coffee I'm getting from my current brewing method, and I am troubled between buying a larger Moka Pot or another equipment 'cos I'm afraid I might not get the same quality I'm enjoying. Would you be so kind to help me? and tell me which is better? Should I stay using Moka Pot since (some says) it's closer to an espresso-like brew? Thank you so much!

    1. What a great question! One where I would need to ask you a question. What are you after, brewed coffee or espresso? If you're after espresso then yes, the moka pot is cthe closest option to an espresso -like brew. As for the french press and aeropress, both of these would yield drip coffee (brewed coffee) and not espresso (although it can be argued that the aero can product espresso as well).

If you're after espresso, upgrade to an espresso machine. If you're after brewed coffee, go for an aeropress (i use it way more that I use my french press) and follow Kaye Ong's recipe from sprudge.com for drip coffee (she's awesome). In my opinion, flexibility would be nice because there are some days where I'm craving for espresso and for others I'm looking for a quality single origin drip brew (from Kalsada or Current Swell).

      Hope this helps!

    2. Yes it does! I'll go with an aeropress! I guess it wouldn't hurt to try something new, and it's good to have a variety of choices. After all I still have my Moka pot to save the day! Thank you so much! Your blogs and swift response are commendable!

    3. You're welcome! There's a reason why a lot of third wave cafes have an aeropress option. :) Enjoy your new aero! I think extraction coffee is down right now, so you can get one from Lazada! They always have a new promo code so that you'd get it at a cheaper price.
